John 7:19 Did not Moses give you the law (Torah)? Yet none of you keeps the law.Event + Interpretation = UnderstandingTorah + Pharisees (merit works) = JudaismTorah + Jesus (grace through faith) = ChristianityWhat Jesus and the early church said was that the Pharisees had the correct event, Torah, but the wrong interpretation (works merit).Note: That righteous, in the Torah, is clearly by grace through faith. Gen 15. Hab 2:4. Rom 4. Etc. etc. etc.
Note that as this process of Event+Interpretation is repeated multiple times, the subsequent interpretations may so alter the concepts of the event that the event itself may almost fade from memory, importance and relevance.Illustration: We can see this in that the subsequent court interpretations of the US constitution have essentially obliterated our understanding of the original meaning of the constitution.
The church has greatly fallen from it grace-privilege when we let the self-righteousness of the Pharisees be our interpretive viewpoint of the Old Testament scriptures.
The Pharisaic Objection..to faith and repentance (grace-faith) as a substitute to a merit of works (self-righteousness). The early church consistently rejected this interpretation, while upholding the sacredness of the grace-faith interpretation of the Old Testament

Micah 7:18 Who is a God like thee, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance?
