ATHS Mission and Purpose Mission • To recognize and achieve excellence amongst Latinos through scholarship, to help render service, and to promote leadership in students. Purposes • To serve its membership in ways which will contribute to the members’ leadership growth, scholarship, and service opportunities. • To promote excellence in Latino students. • To establish a presence of the Latino cultures on campus. • To strengthen our Latino backgrounds.

Adela de la torre • Dr. de la Torre received her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics in 1982 from the University of California, Berkeley. • Her research interests include: border/immigration policies, health-care access/finance issues, Latina/o health, risk and cultural factors associated with HIV/AIDS transmission and Latino childhood obesity prevention. • She is a member of the National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse, former Chair of the board and current and founding board member of the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, and a co-Director of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research. • Currently: Director of the Center for Transnational Health at the University of California, Davis and is a Professor for the Chicana/o Studies Department, at the University of California, Davis

3 tiers through ADLT Scholarship • State that there is a required waiver of release that must be signed by all members • Grad Prep Institute attendance is mandatory Leadership • professional development opportunities • Networking events, job fairs, leadership academy, etc • Emphasize that members represent ATHS at all times
Philanthropy • 2 service learning projects required of all members • Connections with other NIU organizations on the campus community • Emphasize the need of unity in diversity, potential presentations? • Develop identity of strong Latino coalition at NIU campus

MembershipResponsibilities • Embody the vision of ATHS • Uphold missions and values of ATHS • Maintain academic expectations • Willingness and passion to get involved in the DeKalb community and surrounding areas • Time commitment to attend ATHS meetings and events • Ethical conviction to strengthen the Latino identify and presence at NIU
Application Process • Fully completed application (Freshmen vs. Continuing or Transfer) • Typed 1 page essay • Obtain official transcripts, sealed envelope (High School, Community College, or University) • 2 recommendation letters (ONLY one can be from staff at the LRC) • Optional resume
