Contribution to Forensics • Lattes created a procedure to use dried bloodstains and grouped them in groups such asA, B, AB, and O. • Lattes discovered this new procedure in 1915. • The procedure relied on specific antibodies found in the bloodstains to determine the blood type. • The procedure is still used by scientists today.
How It Affected the World • A woman found bloodstains on her husband’s shirt and accused him of adultery. The husband asked for help to prove his loyalty, and Lattes used his procedure to determine that the blood was that husband’s. • A man was suspected of murder because of the bloodstains found on his coat. Lattes used his procedure and the bloodstains did not match the blood type of the victim, thus making the man innocent.
