Identifying Michigan’s dry bean pathogens • 2014-2018 • 7 counties surveyed • Montcalm Research Station and Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Farm sampled every year • Commercial fields • Collected symptomatic dry bean roots Surveyed County
Dry bean root rot pathogens in Michigan Fusarium Rhizoctonia Pythium Janette Jacobs/Kjersten Oudman
Fusarium species • Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) were most abundant • Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) also abundant
Characterization of Fusarium root rot species Control FOSC Control FSSC Fusarium oxysporum Fusarium solani • Drastic reduction in root mass Rotting and lesions on taproot, but little reduction in root mass
Stand reduction – inoculated field trials Field data confirms greenhouse screens F. brasiliense in F. solani 2018 field trial
Significance of root rot disease surveys • Identify what is causing the problem (pathogens) • Pathogens can be characterized • Screen germplasm for resistance to pathogens • Screen seed treatments for efficacy • Work with companies to identify new products/combinations • Application technologies i.e. seed and in-furrow applications
Field trials testing • Germplasm for root rot resistance Dr. Kelly • New seed/in furrow treatments Adam Byrne/John Boyse
Example of germplasm screening Rhizoctonia field inoculation

Fusarium solani species recovered • Recovered expected pathogens F. phaseoli and F. cuneirostrum • Also recovered a novel pathogen on dry bean and it’s first report in North American: Fusarium brasiliense • F. brasiliense is a soybean sudden death syndrome pathogen in South America • F. brasiliense recovered from all counties surveyed
Propulse In-Furrow Trial Red Hawk Zorro * 12 • 2018 at Montcalm Research Station • Non-treated or Propulse in-furrow • Red Hawk and Zorro • Early season phytotoxicity • Plant mass reduction and stand decrease • Decrease in F. brasiliense colonization • No yield affects * 9 Log(fg of F. brasiliense DNA/ ng of taproot DNA) * 6 3 * Non-Treated Propulse V2 R2 R6 V2 R2 R6 * Significant difference
