NEEDED IMPROVEMENTS IN THE FACULTY HANDBOOK FORMAT

This report outlines the needed improvements in the format of the faculty handbook. The current format has excessive outline depth and lacks readability. The proposed steps towards improvement include studying other university handbooks, creating prototypes, adding hyperlinks, and presenting recommendations.

  2. PROBLEMS • Our handbook sections are numbered to an excessive depth – it looks silly • Html version of the Handbook is not easily read. Insufficient white space between sections.

  5. ADDITIONAL ISSUES • Information on a given topic can be spread out through the handbook. • We do not yet take full advantage of hyperlinking and indexing. • Good examples at other universities have a more dignified appearance, utilizing attractive headers and modest use of color.

  6. PROPOSED STEPS TOWARDS IMPROVEMENT • Study a cross-section of Faculty Handbooks at peer institutions (by December) • Derive a specification based on our needs and on best practices (by January) • Create one or more prototypes by transforming the current text to a new format. (by February) • Include hyperlinks in the web form (by March) • Include an index if practical (by March) • Create if possible, modular views (by March) • Present recommendation to GFA/Senate Apr. 20, 2004 • Format change only – no content change. • During this process, call attention to inconsistencies and assist in resolving them.
