  1. Football Van Buren Middle School 2007-2008 Ms. Denlinger

  2. Basics • Team: 8 players; 4 Male & 4 Female • Field: 50 yards long by at least 15 yards wide. Regulation field is 100 yards by 40 yards. Adjust field to ‘fit’ class size • Length of game: 2 halves of 20 minutes. 5-minute halftime

  3. Basics • Defense: The team not in possession of the ball • Offense: The team that has possession of the ball. • Blocking: NOT permitted to use hands to push an opponent away from you. Screening is permitted. Penalty: Loss of down or loss of 5 yards • Huddle: A 25-second time frame in which the offense teams gets organized for each play. Includes Centering the ball to initiate the play.

  4. Start of game: Determined by coin toss or the instructor. The winner may choose to kick OR receive the ball. The loser will choose end of field to defend. The second half the process is reversed.

  5. Kickoff: • The kicking team shall make the kickoff/start/restart from the quarter line. • The ball may be punted or thrown to the opposing team. The receiving team may pick the ball up from the ground.

  6. Kickoff: • Co-Ed RULE: Females ONLY may run or carry the ball forward for yards. • Violation: Illegal male advancement. • Penalty: 5 yd from initial ball contact.

  7. Offensive Setup: Line of Scrimmage: Ball is placed to mark the offensive start of play for lineman. There must be 5 linemen on both teams. Neutral Zone: An area of 3 yards separating the offensive and defensive lines. Cannot be entered offensively until the ball is centered or defensively until 3 “Steamboats” have been yelled after the centering of the ball.

  8. Centering: • The Act of putting the ball in play other than by kick-off. The quarterback calls for the ball to be lifted from field to them. “Hit or Hike” command. • The “center” is the person in front of the quarterback who takes the ball from the ground to the quarterback on command. This is the ONLY person ineligible to receive a pass or carry the football.

  9. Downs/Plays: • A team is allowed 4 plays or downs to move the ball from yard marker to yard marker. • Co-Ed RULE: Every other play must have a female as a PRINCIPAL PLAYER • PRINCIPAL PLAYER: Quarterback, Running Back, and Receiver • Violation: Illegal Procedure • Penalty: Loss of Down, Repeat Female Principal Down

  11. Passing: • Forward: Must be thrown from behind the line of scrimmage. • Lateral: (backwards or perpendicular to sideline) Can be from anywhere at any time.

  12. Pass Interference: • Any player who pushes, blocks, or prevents a player from catching a pass. • Defensive Pass Interference: defensive player prevents reception/catch • Penalty: Automatic 1st Down; ball spotted at infraction site. • Offensive Pass Interference: offensive player prevents an interception. • Penalty: Loss of down; 10-yard penalty

  13. Scoring: • Touchdown = 6 points • Conversion or Points after Touchdown (PAT) • 1 point for a completed running play • 2 points for completed passing play • Field Goal (impossible in class) = 3 points • Safety = 2 points (defensive team) • Ball is legally in the possession of the offensive team behind their own goal line (offensive end zone). The team ‘caught’ in the safety restarts the game by kickoff.

  14. Dead Ball: Detached Flag/Deflag: The ball becomes ‘dead’ and play ceases when the ball carrier’s flag is detached. The ball carrier cannot push to defender’s hands away. Clothing cannot cover the flag. Same as tackling in regular football.

  15. Dead Ball: • 1. Ball carrier’s flag is detached. • 2. Any part of the ball carrier’s body (other than hands or feet) touch the ground • 3. Incomplete Pass • 4. Fumble: Ball that touches the ground at any time other than kick-off. • 5. Ball goes out-of-bounds

  16. Infractions/Violations: • Illegal procedure: less than 5 lineman to start play &/or motion of lineman before centering. • Penalty: Loss of 5 yards • Intentionally Grounding: Throwing the ball into an open space with no possibility of being caught by same team member. • Penalty: Loss of Down

  17. Infractions/Violations: • Illegal Forward Pass: Forward pass thrown in front of line of scrimmage. • Penalty: Loss of down • Illegal Male Advancement: During kick-off, females only can run the ball. • Penalty: Loss of down

  18. Infractions/Violations: • Blocking: Preventing the detachment of the flag by using hands to push opponent away OR Anyone using the hands or arms to push an opponent out of the playing or ball area. • Penalty: • Offensive- Loss of down • Defensive- Loss of 5 yard
