VOCABULARY… • Absolute Value – a number’s distance from zero on the number line 2 • The result from an absolute value will always be positive!
Absolute Value Examples • What is the absolute value of -5? • What is the absolute value of 22? • What is the absolute value of -101? • Compare: 4 __ -4
Example 1… 3___7 Example 3… 13___-18 In order to compare integers, we will always use our comparing symbols: <, >, or = 3 < 7 13 > -18 • Example 2… 42,780 ___ 42,708 • Example 4… -24___-3 -24 < -3 42,780 > 42,708
THE VALUE OF OUR NUMBERS… • Numbers increase in value from left to right on a number line. NegativePositive 0 • Zero (0) is neither negative nor positive. • Zero (0) is a neutral number. • Zero (0) has no opposite number.
