  1. Participation and Co-production EHIVG Managers Meeting 11th December 2018

What is Co-production? • The term co-production refers to a way of working whereby everybody works together on an equal basis to create a service or come to a decision which works for them all. • It is built on the principle that those who use a service (parents/carers/young people) are best placed to help design it. The Ladder of Participation Co-production is the ‘gold standard’ of engagement between workers and service users. Co-production Participation Consultation Information No engagement

SEND Participation Strategy • Children & Families Act 2014 requires services to work in closer collaboration with parents. • Local Area Inspection identified that Durham didn’t take a strategic approach to Participation. • An outcome of the WSoA is to ensure that services improve participation with service users. • A SEND Participation Strategy has been developed in co-production with the MCT (Making Changes Together) Parents Forum. • A roll out of the Strategy is imminent with dates for training frontline staff in place.

Examples of effective Co-production and Participation • Short Breaks Programme in County Durham • SEND Toolkit Leaflets for Parents • Young People’s ‘Futures’ Events • MCT Representation on all operational and governance groups relating to SEND and the WSoA • Barnard Castle Autism Review parents group

Next steps A forthcoming email will direct staff/services to complete the Self-Assessment Tool attached to the Participation Strategy. 6 x 90 minute sessions are available that will look at; • Participation – why it works and why it’s necessary • What engagement, participation and co-production look like • How to engage with service users to ensure the offer you develop and provide is the meeting the needs of your client group These will be followed up six weeks later with a further session for each group, to discuss progress, pitfalls and next steps.
