Area Ridef Area Ridef is a non-profit organization of professionals in the renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainability sectors (all alumni of the postgraduate Master course “Ridef” of  Politecnico di Milano and IUVAT, Venice ). The Association is active in the promotion of renewable energies and sustainability with conferences, workshops, professional courses and training activities some of which are organized in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano. All members participate in the Association’s activities with their time, network and professional experience on a voluntary basis.

Milan Sharing city: Action plan To encourage the creation and strengthening of economic forms of collaboration and sharing, Milan Municipality will: • Map and systematize the most relevant experiences for the Milanese area and encourage the communication of such Initiatives; • Promote public debate, training and information on sharing economy and on the culture of cooperation in order to achieve a critical mass of users; • Promote the analysis and monitoring of the effects and impacts of new forms of innovation and experimentation of sharing, investigating the conditions in which collaboration can be implemented, in order to better understand the phenomenon and create forms of regulation; • Promote a system of recognition and validation of the quality amongst the sharing economy platforms, with few clear rules; • Promote research on the economic, environmental and social impacts of the sharing economy; Milan Council Department for Economic Innovation, Smart City and University, 2015

The «Smart City Lab» incubator for start up for enterprises projecting the “smart city” - Via Ripamonti 88 – Comune di Milano - Ministry of Economic Development -Invitalia, ministerial agencysigned an agreement to raise the "Smart City Lab“ 5MLN Euro public funding The building will be created with the following objectives: • establish a center for development of entrepreneurship and innovation in relation to the project "Milan Smart City” • create a symbolic place, a reference center for research and "showcase" for the diffusion of new trends in urban development and the most advanced technological solutions and to improve the social functioning of the city and the lives of its inhabitants / users. Social Innovation and creation of enterprises FABRIQ: an area of 700 sm for social start-ups FabriQ is a business incubator for the transformation of ideas into concrete projects intended to host young entrepreneurial start-ups whose activities have a social impact. • 1st Call FabriQ: 6 companies, 25 employees; • 2nd call on 3 themes: Smart City, Accessible City and Sharing economy • 85 applications received, 7 winners (May 2015) with a grant up to 20,000 Euros.   32. Milan Sharing city: Civic Crowdfunding The City of Milan is the first municipality in Italy that promotes a crowdfunding planorm dedicated to projects with high social impact in the city. This initiative is part of a collaboration between two different departments of the Municipality Objectives: • To experiment innovative ways to finance projects of public interest; • To promote the pooling of public and private resources • to support projects with high social impact on the Milan’s territory, with possible repercussions on the metropolitan dimension; • To promote the active participation of citizens in Municipality’s decisions, through: • transparency/openness of the process of selection and fundraising • the accessible information on the development of the projects, and their impacton the community

MAIN STEPS Public lighting network The public lighting network is the best enablers for Smart City services since it reaches the entire metropolitan area with a great capillarity 1 LED Lighting The lighting part of street lamps were switched to LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology, bringing savings due to a better energetic / environmental efficiency 2 Smart Lamppost By adding IoT devices (sensors, concentrators etc.) and other equipment to lampposts, they can become main nodes in the smart services network 3

Tech story | Improving waste management in a multi-utility Needs • Monitor the level of fullness of bins, so to schedule the operators for collection • Create statistics on the bins that are more and less used, how and when • Keep track of the inventory of the bins displaced in the city • Optimize the waste collection operations and activities KPIs and benefits • Reduced cost of waste collection activities • Identification of areas that need more/less frequent visits from the operator • Integration of bin state data with scheduling and planning activities • Possibility of combining data with other sources for holistic utility management

Tech story | Reducing auto-consumption costs in a biogas power plant Needs • Acquire data from every electrical load • Acquire fine-grained data from the generator • Acquire production data • Combine and analyze data: fine tuning of operating parameters • Detect/predict anomalous and inefficient behaviors KPIs and benefits • Maximize energy production by fine tuning motors and pumps • Minimize (auto)consumption • Improve maintenance (predict faults/breaks) • Monitor and compare multiple plants to level-up the performance of similar sites
