Why We Care About Physician Burnout A position paper published in April by the National Taskforce for Humanity in Healthcare underscores the professional and personal impact: • Physicians are twice as likely to experience burnout compared to other workers • More than 50 percent of U.S. physicians report symptoms of burnout • Physician burnout leads to–in extreme circumstances–fatal medical errors, clinician suicide, substance abuse and impaired work/life balance • Burnout-related physician turnover costs U.S. healthcare up to $17 billion/year
Why We Care About Physician Burnout If we want to be a Great Place to Work where our physicians provide an Exceptional Patient Experience, we must address the issues that are causing burnout among our medical staff.
Engage and Decide “I deliberately seek input from all stakeholders, including our physicians, clinicians and support teams, so we can make timely and appropriate decisions.” We wanted to hear from YOU about what causes burnout at Inova and what triggers are unique to you and your specialty. Value People & Stronger Together Because we Value our People and know that our success depends on your success (Stronger Together), Inova’s Medical Staff Presidents and Medical Affairs Council have made addressing burnout among our Physician Partners a top priority in 2018.
