  1. Objective:To learn about the motherboard.Warm-up:What is a hard drive? A-13 The permanent memory of a computer

  2. Motherboard Architecture

  3. Motherboards • Motherboards connect all devices in a computer • Comprised of many individual circuit traces grouped together to form busses. Device Trace Bus Device

  4. NorthBridge(GMCH) Processor System Bus • The system bus is also called the front side bus (FSB) • The higher the FSB, the faster the machine CPU FSB

  5. Exercise • CPU right hand • Northbridge left hand • Front Side Bus is your head

  6. The Chipset is a combination of the North and Southbridge. • Northbridge handles high speed (i.e. CPU) • Southbridge handles slow speed (i.e. keyboard)

  7. Buying a Motherboard • Form Factor • FSB Speed • Chipset • CPU (Central Processing Unit, the brain of the computer) Socket Type • Ram Type (Random Access Memory, the temporary memory, is volatile) • Expansion Case Motherboard

  8. NorthBridge(GMCH) Processor System memory FSB/Host Bus VGA PCIe x16 Bus DMI System management bus PCIe x1 SouthBridge(ICH) PCI Bus LAN FWH SIO Audio ClockGenerator USB LPC bus Host clock IDE PCI clock USB clock SATA Hublink clock KB Mouse Floppy Serial Parallel Open MS Word and draw the diagram Email: gordonsigler@gmail.com Subject: Period Name Date

  9. Visual Vocab

  10. Motherboard Drawing • Write your names on the front (on blank paper). • Draw each part of the motherboard. • Label each part in pen. • Color each part. • Use the handout as reference. • First do your vocab and lab write-up!
