  2. The Lord’s Day • The Third Commandment sets aside the Lord’s Day for worship and rest. It is a time that should be dedicated to God. • God made the world in six days; on the seventh He rested. • Jewish people observe the Lord’s Day on the sabbath (Saturday) because it is the day on which God rested. Christians observe the Lord’s Day on Sunday, the day of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  3. The Lord’s Day • Sunday is a day of rest. All unnecessary work must be avoided. • Some jobs require people to work, but most jobs can and should be set aside. • Catholics are also obliged not to make others work unnecessarily on Sundays.

  4. The Lord’s Day • The Third Commandment demands an external form of worship. Therefore, we are obliged to worship at Mass on Sundays (and Holy Days of Obligation). Private devotion does not replace the Sunday duty. • Missing Sunday Mass without a just reason is a mortal sin.

  5. The Lord’s Day • Sunday is also to be a day of joy and rejuvenation. It is a time for spiritual reading, prayer, and private devotions. • Sunday is an opportunity to spend time with family and to do works of charity.

  6. The Lord’s Day • Holy Days of Obligation • Mary, Mother of God – January 1 • Ascension – forty days after Easter • Assumption – August 15 • All Saints – November 1 • Immaculate Conception – December 8 • Christmas – December 25
