PROCESS OF SOCIALIZATION • The stages that an individual goes through, from the raw material of personality at birth to the full emergence of the self • Social Scientists have come up with numerous theories to try to break down into stages this process of absorbing our experiences to become complete selves

  2. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SELF ACTUALIZED/FULFILLED PERSON • Has a good understanding of how people and the world work • is kind to all types of people but also honest about people’s shortcomings • enjoys privacy and independence; has a few strong and very deep friendships • appreciates each day; tries to bring joy into each day as well as meet commitments • has a good understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SELF ACTUALIZED/FULFILLED PERSON CONTINUED • Is a creative risk taker; good problem solver who works well on their own or in groups • can resist peer pressure to accept group values - has self selected value • Cares about people; is democratic and open to new people and new ideas • Does not allow emotions to control their personality

THEORIES TO BE STUDIED: Psychosexual theory - Sigmund Freud Cognitive Development Theory - Jean Piaget Social Experience Theory - Charles Horton Cooley and George Herbert Mead Psychosocial Theory - Erik Erikson Moral Development Theory - Lawrence Kohlberg Gender Based Theory - Carol Gilligan You and your group will present one of the theories and must answer the following questions: 1. What is the main idea of the theory? 2. List the stages and ages of the theory with a brief summary/definition of each 3. What, if any, are the problems with the theory? THEORIES OF SOCIALIZATION

Your Presentation • Should be no more than 5 mins • Should involve ALL group members • Should answer all 3 questions • Should be clear and easy to understand • Could be entertaining • Could give examples • Could have props • Could involve a short skit • Could be very helpful for your next project!!

  6. PORTFOLIO #5 CHOOSE ONE THEORY (INCLUDING MASLOW) AND USE IT TO ANALYZE WHERE YOU CURRENTLY ARE IN THE SOCIALIZATION PROCESS.
