Preparing a Table of Content • When writing a student paper or thesis you need to prepare a table of content. • MS Word provides tools for a smooth and painless creation of professional looking table of content.
Follow Three Simple Steps • Select a heading style • Choose the table of content style, and • Create the “Table of Content”
Heading Style: Step #1 • Highlight the text to set as heading • E.g., Introduction Click the down arrow button on the style box located at the top of the screen, the first box from the left
Heading Style: Step #2 • Choose the desired Heading from the style box • E.g., Heading 1 • You may select any desired heading style
Heading Style: Step #3 • For a second level heading, select Heading 2 • See example on left
Table of Content Style #1 • Create a page break (select “Insert” then “Break”) by inserting the break in front of the first word at the very top of the document. • The cursor should be in our case in front of |Long-Term Effects of Weight Loss and Dietary Sodium Reduction on Incidence of Hypertension.
Table of Content Style #2 • From the Insert menu select Index and Table …and click on the Table of Contents tab • A list including Format Options and Print and WebPreview will appear.
Table of Content Style #3 • The Show page numbers and Right align page numbers options should be selected. • In the Format box select your preferred style (e.g., “Fancy”)
Table of Content Style #4 • Select desired option in Tab leader box • E.g., …………… • Select desired option in Show levels • E.g., “4”
Creating Page Numbers • Follow three steps: • Insert page break • Insert section break • Insert page numbers • General / Simple • Different format
Inserting Page Breaks • Place cursor in front of text you want to separate and select Break from the Insert menu • In the Break box make sure that the Page break radio button is selected.
Inserting Section Breaks • Position cursor in document at the point where you want to insert the section break • Click on the Insert menu • Select Break
Inserting Section Breaks • Under Section breaktypes, click in the Next page radio button. • Select OK
Inserting Page Numbers • From the Insert menu select Page numbers • From the Position menu select either: • Top of page (Header) • Bottom of page (footer)
Inserting Page Numbers(General/Simple Page Numbering) • From pull-down menu box select • Top of page • Right • Check the Show number on first page box • Click OK
Inserting Page Numbers(Different Format) • From the pull-down box select Format • Make your selection of the desired pagination format
Inserting Footnotes and Endnotes • Position cursor and select Footnotes from the Insert menu • Select the numbering style • AutoNumber • Click OK
Formatting Footnotes and Endnotes • For custom symbols instead of auto number click Symbol • Look for the appropriate symbol in the box and select it
