Self-Advocacy • We ask students to address problems by taking the first step: • Writing or emailing the teacher • Approach the teacher before or after class • Discuss the situation during academic lab
Self-Advocacy • Once the student has approached the teacher, if further action is needed: • Students talk to their parent and the parent contacts the teacher. • Parent and teacher work towards a solution.

How to Check Grades • Kyrene’sParentVUE gives you immediate access to your student’s grades. • In fact, you and your student can log on to check them together once a week! • If you have never used ParentVUE before, you can request an activation code from the front office.
What will my student be learning this year? • Reading • Novel studies:Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis; Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli; novel self-selection in 4th quarter • Advanced ELA novel studies: The Year of the Hangman by Gary Blackwood; Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick; novel self-selection in 4th quarter • Various short stories and informational texts from the Holt Elements of Literature text will also be studied.
What will my student be learning this year? • Writing • Using various formats (letters, essays, poetry, etc.) to write narrative, persuasive, and expository pieces • Learning Power Paragraphs for organization • Writing and evaluating claims • Citing textual evidence • Adding description through literal and figurative language
What will my student be learning this year? • Language • Vocabulary: Students will learn 20 new words every two weeks. Various activities will be included to help students memorize these words. Students will also create flash cards that are meant to be studied at home. • Grammar: Students will continue learning about parts of speech and how to correctly compose a sentence. We will also focus on crafting varying sentence structure in writing.
What will my student be learning this year? • Speaking and Listening • One-on-one, group, and teacher-led discussions • Presentations of work, including visual displays and/or multimedia components • Interpretation of speeches and multimedia presentations • Adaptation of speech appropriate to context
