  3. Phil Schroeder • First came to Korea in 1995 as an English teacher • Taught at JLS in Bundang from 2000-2007 • Joined BIS Canada in June 2010 • This is my third year teaching grade 5

  4. Education • B.A. in History and Political Studies • Bachelor of Education • M.A. in Education – Curriculum & Technology • Ontario and British Columbia certified

  5. Philosophy of Education • School is where we raise intellectual beings • Learning happens best when it is meaningful • Keep the bar high, let the students strive But respect differences in ability.

Success Is… • Taking personal responsibility • Taking pride in your work • Being prepared • Being organized • Treating others the way you want to be treated • Being interested and curious • Accepting differences • Embracing teamwork • Being honest • Having a positive attitude We can work together to help your child be a success.

Content and Skills The Content is the BC Curriculum The Ministry of Education sets the education standards for students in grades K to 12 through the provincial curriculum. These standards are called Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs). PLOs outline the expectations for what students should know and be able to do at each grade and within each subject area.

  9. Wikispaces – The Online Classroom Our class wiki… • Is an extension of the learning environment • Allows for more student involvement • Along with blogs, offers students the opportunity to communicate their knowledge to an audience

Recommendations for Parents How can parents support their child? • Ask your child how his/her day went at school • Ask your child what the best idea was that they learned • Ask what the strangest idea was that they learned • Encourage your child to get plenty of sleep • As well, I have a few extra online options to recommend.
