Applying to Warwick Antony Bounds Admissions Coordinator (UG) Student Admissions and Recruitment Office
This presentation will: • Highlight the UCAS application process and some key dates for 2013 entry • Dispel some key myths about applying to University • Explain more about what we are looking for in an application and where we are looking for it, including interviews • Outline some steps to take now, including creating an effective personal statement
What is UCAS? • Up to 5 choices • Deadlines for application forms
Application Deadlines 15th October 2012 OR 15th January 2013
The application process • Applications submitted September onwards • Course selectors consider application • UCAS informs you of outcome (offer/rejection) • You choose a ‘Firm’ (first) and ‘Insurance’ (second) choice of course
Common myths when applying • The sooner I get in my application, the more likely I will be to get an offer • If I apply to Oxbridge then Warwick will reject me • If I don’t put Warwick first on my UCAS application then they will reject me • Admissions Tutors don’t read the personal statements or references • All of the above statements are false!
What to do now • Before you start… • …Establish your objectives • …Establish your priorities • …Consider your personal qualities • …Consider your preferred location • Don’t forget – it’s YOUR choice!
Choosing your course • Match the course requirements to your predictions and abilities • Use the typical offers as a guide (but don’t forget to check online for the latest offer information just before you apply) • Be realistic • Read the course small-print • Good research is the key to success!
What we’re looking for • Intellectual ability • Those who can articulate their aims • Whether you fit the course and it will suit you • Evidence of motivation, commitment and potential to succeed on the course • Well-rounded applicants
Where we’re looking for it • Your academic profile • Your personal statement • Your reference • Interview
Interviews • Interviews at Warwick • Statistics, Engineering, English, Theatre Studies and Film Studies all interview as standard • Interviews take place throughout the year • Academics will always be part of the Interview process • Tips for interviews • Have a mock interview with your teacher or careers advisor • Know your UCAS application inside out • Read up on your subject material • Relax and have a good night’s sleep the night before
The Personal Statement • A chance to impress and differentiate yourself • Focus on your academic aims and goals • Articulate your commitment to the course • Organise your material - structure is important • Sound interesting and interested! • Make it personal - provide an insight into your strengths and personality
Personal Statement Topics • Choice of course • Choice of subjects studied at A2 (or equivalent) level • Sources of inspiration or interest to you relevant to the subject • Career aspirations • Relevant work experience, extra-curricular activities or qualifications • Personal achievements, hobbies and interests • Gap year plans
Personal Statement Style • Humour rarely works – don’t risk it! • Don’t repeat information • Use paragraphs • Make sure the structure flows • Use the space effectively • Make it relevant to the course you are applying to • Link your interests to your personal qualities • CHECK YOUR SPELLING AND GRAMMAR!
How NOT to write a personal statement • “VE Day, in 1947 heralded the end of the Second World War “ • “I’m motivated to tackle any problem, any fear, any adversary that I shall encounter at University with great passion and panache” • “I’ve been attracted to books for over three • years”
