Presentation Outline • History of Refrigerants • Problem Statement • Legacy • Project Continuation • Constraints and Goals • Designs • Alternate Designs • Project Deadlines *No trees were killed in the making of this presentation however, a large number of electrons were severely inconvenienced.
History of Refrigerants • R-134a • Tetrafluoroethane (CH2FCF3) • Refrigerant for domestic refrigeration • GWPR-134a = 1300 • Subject to use restrictions due to environmental impacts • Outlawed in Europe by 2011
Problem Statement • Development of an air condition system, with high efficiency and low environmental impact • Low GWP • Zero Ozone depletion • High COP • Competitive pricing • Competitive Efficiency
Legacy • Yiding Cao Ph.D. adopts the Wankel Rotary Engine for the new gas refrigeration system • Senior Design Team 13 Spring 2010 • Modification of Wankel rotary Engine • Integration of a cooling chamber • Valve control system • Proof of concept
Concept • Rotary single phase compressor and expander
Legacy Alteration • Reduction of friction, lubrication, and refinement of rotary components • Cooling chamber enhancement • Valve system optimization • System testing
Constraints and Goals • Design a system for residential and commercial use • Competitive price • Minimal environmental impact • Coefficient of Performance (COP) • Match COP of current A/C systems that utilize R-134a and 422 • Match system cooling capacity
CO2 and N2 Observations • CO2: Higher COP in comparison to compression ratio • N2: Higher Refrigeration capacity compared to compression ratio
Evaporator Design • Tailored to compressor design specifications • Single Phase Design • Reduction of spikes and drops in pressure • Heat transfer efficiency • Material Considerations • Coil design • Fin design • Airflow
Radiator Design • Fluid considerations or additives • Cooling efficiency • Size and Cost • Pump alternatives • Using power transferred from compressor motor • Individual pump • Fan power and speed • Airflow
Coil Design Alternatives Single coil design - 3D Multiple smaller diameter coils – 3D Single coil – 2D
Conclusion • Design of the single phase AC system that will be highly efficient and have low environmental impact and that will produce coefficient of performance comparable to the current systems • Modifications to current compressor/expander • Designs for single phase components
