FOSS: Full Option Science System • FOSS is a research-based science curriculum developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. • FOSS is also an ongoing research project dedicated to improving the learning and teaching of science. • The FOSS program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students in diverse American classrooms and to prepare them for life in the 21st century. Thematic Units: The organization of a curriculum around a central theme or a series of lessons that integrate subjects across the curriculum that will tie into the main theme of the unit. Each activity has a main focus toward the thematic idea. • History • Geography • Economics • Civics
30-40 minutes of homework per day: • Reading and Reading Log (30 Minutes) • Math or Language Arts Review • Vocabulary Words Homework goes home Monday. Homework is due Monday of the next week. *Homework is checked for completion, timeliness, and a parent signature*
Arts Integration • Arts integration is instruction that integrates content and skills from the arts—dance, music, theater, and the visual arts—with other core subjects. Arts integration occurs when there is a seamless blending of the content and skills of an art form with those of a co-curricular subject. • Throughout the year students will learn Arts Integration strategies to enrich their learning. Some of these strategies include Tableaus, and Moving through Math.
Wellness Policy • Doral Academy - Fire Mesa will be participating in the National School Lunch Program during the 2017-2018 school year to provide free and reduced priced school meals to families that qualify. Implementing a Wellness Policy is a component of this program. We will be closely following the guidelines as listed in the Wellness Policy. Transportation • Please make sure your child knows how they will be picked up that day. • Carpool Lane: Students wait inside with Mrs. Wise and sent out when your code is scanned. • Walkers: Students wait on their dot with their designated teacher and wait for parents to walk up. Students must inform a 3rd grade teacher that they are leaving. • Please communicate with the front office or myself if there is a change in your child’s pick-up.
