  1. CHINA and Disputes

  2. TAIWAN • In 1949, Mao Zedong and the communist defeated a group of Chinese who wanted to create a China that would be a market economy and democratic government.

  3. TAIWAN • These defeated Chinese moved to the island of Taiwan and attempted to set up an independent nation there to rival China. • China still claims the island of Taiwan as its own and even though it is independent, Taiwan is not recognized by most nations of the world.

  4. TAIWAN • Most of the 70 year relationship between China and Taiwan has been hostile but since China’s economic opening, things have changed. • Chinese are moving to Taiwan and Taiwanese are moving to China to engage in business dealings. • This migration has encouraged the governments of both countries to cooperate more on economic activities and political issues.

  5. TIBET • Tibet was an ancient monarchy hidden in the high Tibetan Plateau and is home to a large ethnic group called the Tibetans. China has ruled Tibet at various times in history. China retook the land in 1950 and has controlled it ever since.

  6. TIBET • Many Tibetans do not want to be part of the People’s Republic of China but China claims it is bringing high levels of progress and assistance to Tibet.

  7. TIBET • Since the 1980s, increasing economic changes have resulted in the migration of many ethnic Han Chinese into Tibet for work or settlement. • Tibetans accuse China of encouraging this migration of Han Chinese settlers into Tibet. • Many say that these “migrations” are a deliberate attempt by the Chinese government to wipe outTibetan racial, cultural and national identity and reduce them to a minority in their own homeland.
