  3. Introduction/OverviewWhy are we here? Wendy Abshire

  4. Ground Rules • The dialog begins here. • Attack the problem, not people. • Be open to other viewpoints. • Participate, but don’t dominate. • Cell phones on quiet. • Suffering optional (take breaks as you need them)

  5. Gratitude Laura Pan and Kim Streander

  6. Current situation • Graduates are confident of improved skills in the areas of competency identified as goals of the Leadership Academy. • Graduates have developed a common language and common leadership and management skills in an environment with a powerful diversity of ideas.

  7. Current situation • Leadership Academy participants have camaraderie, and a new sense of mutual respect for individuals from all parts of the organization. • There is a groundswell of enthusiasm for working together to improve on an awesome institution.

  8. Current situation • AND there is a common sense of uncertainty about the future: • The LA is a small group. Response to the use of techniques we have learned has been inconsistent. How can we be empowered to be the agents of positive change? • How can the skills of LA graduates be utilized to add value to the institution?

  9. Current situation • Uncertainty • Will the institution experience a shift in the expectations and values for leadership at all levels? • How can we continue to develop and practice the leadership skills introduced in the LA? Will there be an ongoing program of continuing education for graduates of the LA?

  10. Questions for the PC • What shift have you observed in our institutional definition of leadership? • What are your current challenges as leaders of this organization? • What are the current management challenges of the organization?

  11. Vision - UCAR/UOP/NCAR • We have a diversity of ideas with a common language. • We are collaborative and not combative. • We have tools for finding common cause. • We are efficient. • We are welcoming. • We have equitability in positions and ideas.

  12. Vision • Ideas have the opportunity to percolate to the top. • Decisions involve groups, not just individuals. • We are one team. • Program development at all levels, adequately funded, we lead as a national center. • Balanced resources match expectations.

  13. Vision (added after discussion) • More fruitful interactions with additional universities and other organizations at many levels: administration, engineering, science, etc. • Full participation in leadership development.

  14. Questions for the PC • What is the optimal management structure to fulfill our vision?

  15. Action • Establish next LA/PC meeting. • Form a problem-solving LA pool list of who is available and when. • Find a way to implement organizational-wide solution box (every voice counts).

  16. Action • Explore ways to incorporate elements of the LA throughout the organization. • Find opportunities to reinforce and add lessons for LA grads (continuing ed). • Explore the way the LA can help with institutional communication.
