F. Because Of The Triumphal Entry (Jn 12:1-50) 1. The Thanksgiving Dinner (12:1-11) 2. The Triumphal Entry (12:12-19) 3. The Total Sacrifice (12:20-36) 4. The Troublesome Response (12:37-43) 5. The Timeless Challenge (12:44-50) a. To Believe in Christ is to Believe in the Father. (vv. 44-45)
b. To Believe in Christ is to Come to the Light. (v. 46) c. To Disbelieve in Christ is to Be Judged by the Word. (vv. 47-50) John offers his own extended theological comment here. ~ In effect, he closes this section in his gospel about Jesus’ public ministry with a summary of Jesus’ entire testimony.
~ It is an ultimatum set before the crowds: Believe in Jesus, the Light of the World, or live in darkness under God’s judgment. a. To Believe in Christ is to Believe in the Father. (vv. 44-45) Read Jn 12:44-45. In this appeal, He affirmed His union with the Father.
~ Knowing Christ means knowing the Father. Loving Christ means loving the Father. Receiving Christ means receiving the Father. ~Christ and the Father are one (Jn 10:30). ~ The unique subordination/ submission of the Son to the Father is precisely what guarantees that all that the Son does is what the Father wants Him to do, indeed, what the Father does.
~ D.A. Carson: “[F]aith in Jesus... is not faith in a merely human agent, one more prophet, but faith in God mediated by God’s supreme self- disclosure, the Word incarnate, the God/man, His unique Son – or else it is not faith at all.” ~ And so closely is the Son, the Word, identified with the Father (Jn 1:1, 18), that to see Jesus is to see the Father who sent Him (cf. Jn 14:9).
Read Jn 12:45. ~ When one is looking intently and constantly upon Jesus, and notices how in His words and works the glory of the Father is reflected, then with the eye of faith, one is looking upon His Sender. ~ Those who believe in the Son also believe in the Father. JESUS IS GOD. ~ We do not merely believe in God or in Jesus – to believe in God we must believe in Jesus.
b. To Believe in Christ Is to Come to the Light. (v. 46) Read Jn 12:46. As the Father’s agent, the Father’s Son, Jesus is the revealer of God (Jn 1:18). ~ Jn 8:12 ~ The purpose of His coming was not to bring condemnation but transformation.
Here, Jesus testifies that He came into the world to be “a light” through which men could be delivered from “darkness” – the “darkness” of sin and ignorance. ~ Those who believe in Jesus have left Satan’s dark kingdom and influence, and they have entered the light of God’s kingdom. ~ Some people in the church act as though they still remain in darkness.
~ Jesus died so that we might be transformed. ~ If our life is not changing, we may not have begun to really follow the light. At the same time Christ shows how we receive so great a blessing when He says that “everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.” ~ God’s promises are for those who believe (cf. Jn 3:16). There is no real “light” apart from Jesus!
