  3. Education • Initially started as part of the Factory Acts of 1802, 1819, 1831, 1833 • Developed into the modern idea of free public education

  4. Sanitation • Diseases like cholera spread in large cities • 1850’s city planers begin to build sewage systems • Greatly reduced spread of disease

  5. Medical Advances • Doctors researching Cholera epidemics begin to come up with Germ Theory • Louis Pasteur- proves existence of microorganisms and invents Pasteurization

  6. Demographic Changes • Advances in sanitation and medicine cause: • Death rates to plumet • Population skyrockets • UK • 1801: ~8,000,000 • 1901: ~30,000,000

  7. Big Picture • The industrial revolution is responsible for much that we take for granted. • What to look forward to: • Class Struggle • Unions • COMMUNISM!
