  1. Learning Goals • The students will understand the oil boom in Oklahoma.

  2. BLACK GOLD !

  3. The first oil well in Oklahoma was drilled many years ago.

  4. Oil wells were given names. The first oil well in Oklahoma was the “Nellie Johnstone No. 1”

  5. It was located in Bartlesville.

  6. The Oklahoma oil fields are part of big, underground pools called the “Mid-Continent Oil Region.”

  7. Mid-Continent Oil Field (in red.)

  8. Here, under the ground is “crude” oil - some of the biggest pools in the world!

  9. Crude oil is a thick, black liquid.

  10. Oil is also called “petroleum.”Petroleum can be turned into useful products, like gasoline to runour cars.

  11. Factories burn petroleum to make electricity, too.

  12. These are called “oil derricks”.

  13. Oil derricks hold up many pipes, used to drill deep into the earth.

  14. Older derricks looked like this and were made out of wood.

  15. Newer derricks were made out of metal, like this one.

  16. At the end of the drill pipe is a drill “bit” with strong metal “teeth.” They dig through the earth.

  17. Because of the oil found there, Tulsa became known as the"Oil Capital of the World." The Oklahoma City oil field also became one of the biggest producers of oil.

  18. More than 30 BILLION barrels of crude oil have been pumped from the Mid-Continent Region!

  19. Two years before Oklahoma gained statehood, an oil gusher sprung up outside of Tulsa.

  20. Wooden oil derricks soon dotted the land.

  21. This pool of oil was called the Glenn Pool.

  22. Glenn Pool brought many workers to Tulsa.

  23. Oil made some people millionaires, such as Frank Phillips, J. Paul Getty, William Skelly, H. H. Champlin, Erle Halliburton and E. W. Marland.

  24. William Skelly, who founded Skelly Oil,turned it into one of the world's largest oil companies. He came to be known as "Mr. Tulsa".

  25. But other oil discoveries, like Cushing, helped make Oklahoma the No. 1 producing state in the country!

  26. <> Oil was then found in Oklahoma City!

  27. The “gusher” erupted, blowing 5,000 barrels of oil into the airduring the first day!

  28. The most famous well in oil history was the “No. 1 Mary Sudik” drilled in Oklahoma City!

  29. It was drilled in1930 and was nicknamed the “Wild Mary Sudik!”

  30. “Wild Mary” coated houses and businesses in black oil…Guards kept crowds away and turned back traffic. For 11 days, the oil continued to blow out of the ground! l

  31. Finally, workers could shut off the oil. People spent weeks cleaning oil out of the streets, ditches, and creeks around town!

  32. Oil discoveries created oil “boom” towns.

  33. With the beginning of drilling activity, oil field workers would flock to the area.
