Global Population and Environment Program Partners include: Alan Guttmacher Institute, Americans for UNFPA, Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE),Choice USA, GoJoven, International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC), Izaak Walton League of America National Wildlife Federation, Pathfinder International, Planned Parenthood Federation of America,Population Reference Bureau, Sierra Student Coalition, United Nations Population Fund, WaterAID Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, World Wildlife Fund and more!

  4. What we’ve done We provide trainings for population activists. Since 2003, we have conducted a series of study tours in Ecuador, Madagascar, India, Philippines, and Ethiopia to explore these diverse challenges and the Population, Health, and Environment In June, we traveled to Brazil for the 20th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20. We co-hosted a side event on youth sexual and reproductive health and rights and their connection to the environment and sustainable communities. Kim Lovell with Suzanne Yorke Brought students to One Voice Summit which provides a forum for participants to gather and share information relevant to the intersections of sexual and reproductive health and the environment.

What the Chapters have done New York Conferences on Population: In late October, the Committee partnered with the Izaak Walton League of America, Americans for UNFPA, and Students in Health to bring a discussion of global population to Columbia University. Dr. William Schlesinger, from the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, spoke about the environmental implications of population growth. Kathy Schwarz MPH, a NYC Committee member, gave a presentation as well, examining the linkages between population and hunger. On November 9th, the NYC Committee, the Sierra Club’s Global Population and Environment Program, and the Izaak Walton League of America brought together two passionate advocates - Bill Ryerson of the Population Media Center, and Babu Rahm of UNFPA, to talk about the many intersections between population and the environment. Specifically, the event focused on youth as well as population in the media Received a grant from Sierra Club’s Activist Fund for a high school outreach program that will start in the fall!

What the Chapters have done Sacramento Los Angeles Past Events The Sierra Club, Mother Lode Chapter, Committee for a Sustainable World Population(CSWP)is showing "MOTHER...CARING FOR 7 BILLION.“ CSWP had a booth at the Film Festival in Nevada City, Jan. 14-15, with over 6,000 attendees. They have a booth at the annual ECOS Fair, Sierra College, April 18-19, and at nine other Earth Day venues. Tabling at events, lobbying, web presence and letter writing The L.A. Chapter has many lively population activists within its International Issues committee. They are developing an outreach program for high-birth communities.

  7. What We would like to do! Follow and support other Sierra Club Population committees. Tabling at environmental conferences and maybe a local Farmer’s Market? Raise awareness on population issues in the S.F. Bay Chapter. Launch a high school education program with howmany.org and Los EcosAmigos. Get connected to local and national population organizations. Do something creative and exciting! We want your ideas, let’s do something amazing.
