Nucleus: A Look into the Cell By Peter Umland
History of the Nucleus • First organelle of the cell to be discovered. • First drawing created by Antonievan Leeuwenhoek with the first microscope. • Nucleus was described by Franz Bauer in 1804. • More detail was found in 1831 by Robert Brown. • In 1838, MatthaisSchleiden proposed that the nucleus played a roll in generating cells.
Location of the Nucleus • The nucleus is only in Eukaryotic Cells which are the cells of Animals, Plants, and Fungi. • The nucleus is inside a cell and is not necessarily the center of the cell. nucleus
Function of the Nucleus • The main function of the nucleus is to control gene expression and mediate the replication of DNA during the cell cycle. • Provides a site for genetic transcription. • Gene expression produces mRNA by encoding proteins and is exported and eventually used to copy the DNA from one cell’s nucleus to another.
Structure of the Nucleus • Largest organelle in animals. • Average diameter of nucleus in mammals is 6 μm (about 10% of the cell’s volume). • The liquid within the cell is called nucleoplasm. • The nuclear envelope encloses the nucleus to stop macromolecules. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Diagram_human_cell_nucleus.svg
