http://www.kochanowicz.com/Atoms%20Photos.htm • Atom- smallest particle that an element can be divided & still be the same substance • Atomos-Greek word meaning “indivisible” http://education.jlab.org/qa/atom_model.html
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/kids/science/Chemistry/Atoms/Atomic%20Stucture.htmhttp://www.cartage.org.lb/en/kids/science/Chemistry/Atoms/Atomic%20Stucture.htm The Atom’s Nucleus & Beyond • Protons- (+) charged particles; nucleus • Neutrons-neutral; nucleus • Quarks-make up P & N • e-negatively charged; electron cloud outside of the nucleus http://www.phys.uu.nl/~thooft/quarks.html
Identifying the Atom • Atomic Number - # of P. In a neutral atom this is also the amount of e- http://education.jlab.org/glossary/atomicnumber.html
Mass # - sum of P & N. Round the atomic mass # subtract protons to get the neutrons • Atomic mass - average of the masses of the naturally occurring isotopes • Atomic mass unit (amu) SI unit of atomic particles http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/try_l1/cosmic_rays.html
Isotopes - atoms that have same # of P but different amount of N. • Unstable atom - atom whose nucleus can change it composition • Radioactive - result of unstable atoms http://www.bcpl.net/~kdrews/introterms/intro4.html Free powerpoint template: www.brainybetty.com
Big Bang Theory • The current theory behind where all matter started Note that the only elements that come from the Big Bang are: Hydrogen Helium Lithium (a little bit) The expansion of the universe began at a finite time in the past, in a state of enormous density, pressure and temperature. Small Stars- fuse H into He & then fuse He into C, N, and O. These last 3 Elements make up the air we breathe & More than 85% of our body weight. Fusion- process of 2 small atomic nuclei coming together to make a larger nucleus. The simplest nuclei to use are deuterium & tritium (isotopes of hydrogen)
According to NASA Beginning of Heavier Elements Large stars supernovae • Make heavy as well as light elements through process of fusion in their cores. • i.e. large stars create Ca in your bones & Fe in your blood, the Si in the soil, & the S that’s in your hair • The explosive power of supernovae creates & disperses a wide range of elements. • i.e. the chlorophyll in green plants contains Mg from supernovae. The Au used in jewelry & the Ti used in light-weight eyeglass frames.
