  1. Brandon FaulknerPatrick DelpMelissa Grubb CAD Model of Moonbuggy Design Honors Project ME 262 Spring Semester 2001

  2. IUPUI Moonbuggy Design • Senior Design Project advised by Dr. Pidaparti • Purpose is to race in Huntsville, AL on moonlike terrain • Moonbuggy team recently went to compete and placed 11th/28 teams.

  3. Requirements for Moonbuggy • Must be work of students • Must be human powered • Unassembled, must fit in a volume of four foot cube • Riders must always be 15” above ground • Turning radius must be 20’ or less • Must have one male, one female driver

  4. Great Moonbuggy Race Course

  5. Moonbuggy Team

  6. Our ME 262 Honors Project Objectives • Learn to use the CAD/CAM software ProE • Study the components of the Moonbuggy • Create 3D models of parts of the moonbuggy • Combine the part models with other student’s models • Present final results

  7. Patrick Delp Brandon Faulkner Melissa Grubb Model Moonbuggy Frame and Steering Model Moonbuggy Suspension System Model Moonbuggy Transmission System Specific Duties of Each Student

  8. Process of Creating Frame • Two cubic portions • Connecting rod • Wheel mounting brackets • Transmission mounting bars • Wheels • Seats • Steering

  9. Frame

  10. Process of Creating Suspension • Body of shock • Washers • Spring • Eye-Bolt

  11. Suspension

  12. Process of Creating Transmission • Universal Joint • Mount • Gear • Pedals

  13. Transmission

  14. Final Assembly

  15. Side View

  16. Front View

  17. Rear View

  18. Bird’s Eye View

  19. Groundhog View

  20. Actual versus Model

  21. How does this apply to ME 262? • Mechanical Design • Computer Aided Design and Analysis • Modeling of Three Dimensional Joints

  22. Universal Joint (2 DOF)

  23. Steering Joint (3 DOF)

  24. Conclusion • What did we learn? • How did this go above and beyond the normal course duties? • What are our future plans for these 3D models?

  25. How to create solid models in Pro/Engineer How to assemble solid models in Pro/Engineer Real World Applications of Joints Composition of Suspension and Transmission System What did we learn?

  26. How Did this go beyond normal course work? • We used Pro/Engineer to model systems • We studied in three dimensions • We did an in-depth study of Moonbuggy components

  27. What are the future plans for the models? • Motion studies of joints • Motion studies of linkages • Motion studies of reactions to applied loads

  28. Acknowledgements • Dr. H. U. Akay (Honors Project advisor) • Dr. R. Pidaparti (Moonbuggy advisor) • Jay Abshire (Provided pictures of Moonbuggy)
