Liquid Volume • The volume of an object is the amount of space it takes up. • Liquid volume is measured using a graduated cylinder. • Liquid volume is measured in milliliters (mL), liters (L), and kiloliters (kL).
Measuring Liquid Volume • When reading a graduated cylinder, be sure to place it on a level surface. • Always view the liquid surface at eye level
Meniscus • Liquid in a graduated cylinder has a curved surface called a meniscus. • Read the volume of the liquid at the bottom of he meniscus.
Reading a Graduated Cylinder • Graduated cylinders come in various sizes (10 mL to 1 L) • Most graduated cylinders are divided into increments of 5 or 10 with smaller marks representing one milliliter. • Some are divided into increments of 20 with the smaller marks representing 2 mL.
