  1. SIDS By: C.J. Cortes, Richard Dorsainvil, and Aarronn Quinones

  2. What is SIDS? • SIDS stands for sudden infant death syndrome. • It is seen as the cause if the death of the infant remains unexplained. • Approximately 3,000 infants die each year from this disease.

  3. Cause of SIDS • There is no known cause for SIDS. • Certain factors such as wrong physical or sleep environments for the infant. • These factors are different for every infant. • A leading hypothesis is that SIDS may reflect a delay or abnormality in the development of nerve cells within the brain which affect the function of the lungs and heart.

  4. Cure/Treatments for SIDS? • Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease or treatments for this disease.

  5. Symptoms of SIDS • The symptoms are basically nonexistent because deaths occur without any warning.

  6. Prevention of SIDS? • There are several ways of preventing this disease from affecting the infant and possibly saving his or her life such as: • Always put a baby to sleep on its back. • Only put babies to sleep in a crib. • Don’t use breathing monitors/products marketed as ways to reduce SIDS.

  7. Prevention of SIDS? (cont’d) • Let babies sleep in the same room as the parents (not in the same bed). • Avoid soft bedding materials. • Make sure that the room temperature isn’t too hot or cold. • Offer a baby a pacifier before it goes to sleep.

  8. Famous person whose baby died from SIDS • Robert Redford
