SIDS • Leading cause of death from 1m-1y • 10,000 deaths annually • Primary cause appears to be abnormal ventilatory response
Groups at Increased Risk • 1. Term infants with hx of apnea • 2. Premature infants of low birth weight • Or premies with broncho-pulmonary dysplasia • 3. Siblings of infants that have succumbed to SIDS • 4. Infants of substance abusing mothers
Clinical Features • Age one month to one year • Peaks between 2-4 months • 30-50% with URI, otherwise healthy • Found in crib cyanotic and apneic
Management • ALTE victims should be admitted • Recurrence in 20-100% • Siblings are at risk 2-10 fold • Septic workup, ECG, apnea monitoring • #1 Preventative measure is “Back to Sleep” • Also increased risk with co-sleeping
