  3. Dependent Clauses • It must have a SUBJECT and a VERB but DOES NOT express a complete thought • An easy way to find a dependent clause is to look for the SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTION

  5. Example Dependent Clauses • When the owllicked my eye • IfMr. Stumpdanced the rumba • Sincehekissed the hedgehog

  6. Complex sentences: • A complex sentence includes an INDEPENDENT CLAUSE and a DEPENDENT CLAUSE

  7. Let’s Practice! • Unless Ms. Edgett throws the paper airplane • The hedgehog bit the rhino • If Ms. Allen wrote on the desk • Because the student danced the Cupid Shuffle • All dogs go to heaven

  8. Comma! • A complex sentence requires a comma if the DEPENDENT clause comes FIRST

  9. No Comma! • A complex sentence does not require a comma if the DEPENDENT clause comes LAST.

  10. DEPENDENT CLAUSE comes first: • After they finished studying, Juan and Maria went to the movies.  DEPENDENT CLAUSE comes last: • Juan and Maria went to the movies after they finished studying.

  11. If I punch him in the face I will go to jail. • Does this sentence require a comma? • WHY??

  12. I kicked him in the shin because he laughed at my hedgehog. • Does this sentence require a comma? • WHY??

  13. Practice! • When Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz it was very noisy. • The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.  • Because he loves it so much Mr. Stump goes to Anime conventions. • If I buy that dress my dad will kill me. • She will be a beautiful bride because she wore a pink dress.
