Slopes A Yow-tastic Presentation
Slope • The Steepness of a line…. Really Steep Not Very Steep Zero Steepness
When will this ever be Important???
Roy Lee “Chucky” Mullins • Played for Ole Miss in the late 1980’s. • He’s best known for the devastating football injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
His accident…. • On October 28, 1989, during the Ole Miss Rebels' Homecoming game against the Vanderbilt, Chucky plunged head-first to tackle a fullback named Brad Gaines after a short pass.
Sadly……. • Chucky’s hit saved a touchdown, but the collision shattered four vertebrae in his cervical spine and paralyzed him instantly. • Chucky was airlifted and transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
His Injury… • He underwent a 5 hour surgery where the doctors tried to “fuse” back his broken vertebrae, but Chuck never regained feeling below his neck. • Ole Miss fans, college football fans in the South, and people from all over the nation immediately began to donate $ to help Chucky Mullin with the medical expenses.
And… • President George Bush visited Mullins in his hospital room personally and encouraged him while on a visit to Memphis.
Chucky didn’t give up on life… He returned to Ole Miss on June 20, 1990 to complete his undergraduate education. • He continued to go to Ole Miss football games. • He inspired all who knew him!
Remembering Chucky Mullins… Brad Gaines Less than a year after returning to school, Mullins was stricken by a pulmonary embolism, caused by blood clots formed by inactivity and poor circulation. He died in the hospital on May 6, 1991. He died with a footballcradled in his arms and Brad Gaines at his bedside. July 8, 1969 - May 6, 1991
Remembering Chucky Mullins… • Chucky Mullin’s number (#38) was officially retired during the pre-game ceremonies of the 2006 season opener against Memphis.
American’s with Disabilities Act of 1990… • signed into law by President George Bush, Sr.
What does it say? • In short…………that RAMPS must be built for people who can’t use stairs…..people like Chucky Mullins.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 states that: The slope of any wheelchair ramp should not be steeper than a 1/12 ratio. This means that for every inch of rise of the wheelchair ramp, its length (the run) needs to be at least 12 inches.
Did you know????? • That the larger the RUN (the bottom number in the slope ratio), the gentler the angle of incline? • Though the slope can not be steeper than a ratio 1/12, it is preferred that the wheelchair ramps have a ratio of 1/16 .
What types of slope are there? • Positive • Negative • Zero • Undefined • A line is “read” from left to right – just like you read words on a page!
Positive Slope These lines rise to the right. Notice that the line goes “uphill” as your eyes go from the left to the right!
Negative Slope These lines fall to the right. Notice that the line goes “downhill” as your eyes go from the left to the right!
Zero Slope HoriZontal Line
Undefined Slope U N D E F I N E D P O W N
YOU TRY! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
In closing – an MCT2 Practice Problem Which of the following has a positive slope? A. B. C. D.
