Last Thoughts Peter Galison Harvard University ASU Trading Zone Conference
Trading Zones • Not collaboration in which everyone does the same thing: 27 bricklayers working on a big wall. • Not “line work” in which each does an operation essentially independent on the other: you solder a wire, I snap on the case.
Put Positively • Mediating objects, values, identities located in recognizable ways to two or more antecedent arenas. • Neither 0 nor 1: neither universal language nor absolute incommensurability. Finiteness.
Questions • What specifically is shared? What is not imported from the antecedent arenas? • Can one characterize what characteristically comes from each? E.g. in linguistics often grammar comes from one group and terms from the other. Radar work.
Example question: Fishing • Fishing: What comes characteristically from the environmental groups, what from the fishers, what from the regulators? How does this intermediate zone change over time? Are there people who figure between the two groups (recognized by both)? We know the gear technicians learned quite a lot about how to interact with the fishers—did the fishers or some fishers come to act or speak differently about issues on the border of fishing and conservation? Did anyone stand outside the two groups? Are such mediators increasing?
Example: reproductive health • How do the women’s groups come to speak about reproductive health? What parts of this way of acting and talking come from the way such matters appear in a Euro-American context? What part comes from the specifically Indian context? How has this been changing over time—that is, do you see the region of coordination on the ground as expanding, shrinking, stable? Are there mediators who do not count as fully either of the prior groups?
Example: Nano-ethics • “Humanist” enters the nano-laboratory and learns the discursive expertise to participate, suggests changes. Does there develop a characteristic way of thinking in which pieces of the ethicist’s forms of reasoning joins with characteristics of e.g. engineering practices? Is this one-off? Does it have a growing impact?
