The Beginning • In 1877, Thomas Edison created the phonograph, and successfully played “Mary Had A Little Lamb” using the device.
1878 • The first music was put on record with the recording of Jules Levy performing “Yankee Doodle”.
1887 Emile Berliner creates a flat-disc gramophone, giving a possibility of multiple copies of a recording.
1888 • Edison creates an electrically-motored phonograph.
1898 Valdemar Poulsen patented his Telegraphone, which used magnetic force on a on steel wire.
1901 • Audio recordings are made on motion picture films.
1910 • Enrico Caruso is in the first live radio broadcasting at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
1913 • The first "talking movie" is created by Thomas Edison using his Kinetophone, a cylinder player that was synchronized to the projector.
1919 • The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) is founded.
1921 • The first commercial radio broadcast is made in Pittsburgh, PA on AM radio.
1926 • O'Neill patented his idea for iron oxide-coated paper tape.
1933 • Magnetic recording on steel wire is developed commercially. • The first inner-city stereo audio program is broadcasted.
1936 • The first tape recording of a concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra was recorded.
1940 Walt Disney's eight track, "Fantasia", is released.
1941 • Commercial FM broadcasting begins in America.
1955 • Ampex develops the Selective Synchronous Recording (or sel-sync)device.
1956 • Musician and song-writer, Les Paul, makes the first 8-track record using the sel-sync method.
1978 • 3Mintroducesmetal-particle cassette tape.
1980 • Sony produces a stereo cassette tape player called a "Walkman."
1981 • Philips creates the Compact Disc (CD).
1982 • Sony releases the first CD player
1986 • Dr. Gunther Theile describes a sphere-shaped microphone.
1996 • Record labels begin to add multimedia files called enhanced CDs.
1999 • Audio DVD Standard 1.0 is agreed on.
