3: Network, Network, Network • Effective research is a lifelong skill that will aid you in the Labor Movement and also in your own career and personal life! • Start a list of contacts and friends who can help you do research • Build it over a lifetime • Example: Business information search involving 6 universities (April 2009) Research Skills | IRLE Library
Thinking About Your Projects… • Some resources to consider: • News Databases: the press covers labor issues • Hoover’s Online and business information aggregators • Business Articles: Use the Library Web page shown today • The open Web: It has some good guides too Research Skills | IRLE Library

Recommendations for Database Searching • There’s a lot of variety in database structure—and Web screens may not convey the nuances • Always take a moment to read the introductory material when tackling a new resource Research Skills | IRLE Library
Check the Default Search: Is It Keyword or Phrase? • Either approach can be appropriate depending on the search: phrase for broad searches, keyword for narrow searches • You may be able to “force” a keyword search by using AND: cinema and immigration • You may be able to “force” a phrase with quotations: “gun control” Research Skills | IRLE Library
