Trichuriasis A Brief Introduction to the World’s 3rd Most Common Worm Infection
Rates from Trichuriasis by country (per 100,000 inhabitants) less than 5 • most prevalent in hot and humid climates 10-15 35-40 45-50 more than 60 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trichuriasis_world_map_-_DALY_-_WHO2002.svg
A Brief Introduction • What is Trichuriasis • What is the cause of this NTD • Route of infection • Treatment and Preventative Measures
Overview What is Trichuriasis? • parasitic infection caused by Trichuris, commonly referred to as whip worm • infects the human intestine and colon • 604 million people infected worldwide • Regarded to be one of the seven most common NTDs by the Global Network of Neglected Tropical Diseases
Symptoms What is Trichuriasis? • often asymptomatic • diarrhea, dehydration, headaches, vomiting, nausea, anemia • in severe, untreated cases, it can lead to clubbing of fingers • swelling of intestines • in rare cases, can lead to appendicitis Image: http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2008/05/27-02.html
caused by the parasite known as whipworm • thrives in warm, humid environments Cause Fig. 2whipworm • infection is caused by ingestion of soil contaminated by whipworm eggs or contaminated food products • when eggs hatch, they stick to the interior wall of the large intestine • due to its relatively easy transmission, accidental ingestion of soil by children makes them the majority of infected patients Image: http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2008/05/27-02.html
3. Eggs ingested via soil Pathway of Infection 5. Worms establish themselves in the colon 2. Eggs develop in soil 4. Eggs hatch in small intestine and release larvae 1. Eggs passed in stool
Preventative Measures Treatment • Educational efforts aimed at • proper waste disposal • Sanitation management • proper hand-washing techniques • proper cooking techniques • Overall Aim: Stress Hygiene
Medicinal Measures Treatment • Anthelmintic drugs • remove parasitic worms from the body • albendazole • mebendazole • 50 million tablets of mebendazole donated per year by Johnson & Johnson • Albendazole available for 2¢ a pill by GlaxoSmithKline • Currently no vaccine exists for trichuriasis Source: http://gnntdc.sabin.org/about-ntds/factsheets/trichuriasis
