  1. Remote SAM Initiative (RSI) –Proposed Work Plan July 19, 2002 Mark Sosebee U.T. Arlington

  2. Goals For This Work • Regular data transfers between remote sites and FNAL to exercise the system. • Monitor these transfers to understand system performance. • Bring up additional stations at other remote institutions. Mark Sosebee

  3. Current Remote Stations Mark Sosebee

  4. Current Remote Stations (cont.) • Some sites have more than one station installed. • Probably not all of these stations are active – see Lee’s slides from OU workshop: www-hep.uta.edu/~d0race/meetings/jul-10-2002/lee-071002.pdf • Some sites are MC farms, hence expect large data transfers. • Is this list complete?? Mark Sosebee

  5. Testing Proposal • A simple script that pulls one or more files from FNAL to the remote site. Will need to tune: • size of the file(s) • frequency • Write results to a log file – perhaps eventually publish (www) some version of this data? Mark Sosebee

  6. “Inactive” SAM Stations • Earlier slide counted 22 remote stations, but not all are active – why? Some possibilities: • setup, functioning, but little used • setup, but problems getting station functional • incomplete install • any others?? • Previously sent around survey to remote sites – 3 responses. • Collect updated status reports, and work toward solutions for sites with problems. Mark Sosebee

  7. IEPM Testing • Test stations setup at SLAC, FNAL (dmzmono), and Manchester. • Once UTA node (heppc32.uta.edu) is added to the mix, will expand to all remote SAM stations. • Question of whether to install software at UTA, or monitor from FNAL. • I’ll know more once things are setup here. Mark Sosebee

  8. Schedule / Milestones • 8/31/02: regular data transfer test running at all currently functional remote stations. • 10/31/02:Sites which have installed stations but are experiencing problems are debugged and added to data transfer tests. • 01/31/03: Any DØ institution desiring to run SAM at their site is setup to do so. (This is actually an ongoing effort.) Mark Sosebee

  9. 8/31/02 Milestone • What has to be done: • Distribute script to remote sites • Setup to run automatically (cron, etc.) • If a site has a working SAM station should execute without additional configuration • Decide on the size and frequency of data pulls – modify as necessary Mark Sosebee

  10. 10/31/02 Milestone • Contact each site to determine status, then: • For those sites whose SAM station works but they have not been using it, setup data pull test • Sites with problems will be addressed and solutions provided (MS tries initially – consult SAM experts as necessary) • Experience gained from first few sites should speed up the remaining ones (common problems, etc.) Mark Sosebee
