A. Electromagnetic Radiation • Visible light- light you see with your eyes • Electromagnetic radiation- light is a form of elec… • Energy that can travel through space in the form of waves • Wavelength- the distance between crest and crest • Visible light has short wavelengths • Electromagnetic spectrum includes radio waves, infrared radiation, visible light and X-rays
B. Telescopes • Most telescopes collect and focus different types of electromagnetic radiation • Refracting Telescope- uses convex lenses to gather large amounts of light and focuses it to a small area • Convex lens- curved piece of glass • Reflecting telescopes- uses a mirror • Radio Telescopes- focus radio waves • Some use infrared radiation
C. Observatories • A building that contains one or more telescopes • Located on mountain tops • Best Mauna Kea- very dark and free of clouds
D. Satellites • Placed telescopes on satellites • Hubble- above Earth’s atmosphere – 7x clearer images
E. Spectrographs • Breaks light from an object into colors and photographs the spectrum • Use to get info about stars like chemical makeup • Elements absorb light at different wavelengths, therefore making different spectrums • Stars at different temperatures produce different line spectrums
