  3. Battle of Hattin

  4. What factors contributed to Saladin’s victory?

  5. Christians in Jerusalem surrender to Saladin’s army.

  6. What actions spark the 3rd Crusade?

  7. The Third Crusade • Called for by Gregory VIII in 1187. • Richard I of England. • Philip Augustus of France. • Frederick Barbarossa- Holy Roman Empire.

  8. Frederick Barbarossa • Nearly 70 years old, drowns in a freak accident while crossing a river. • Many of his followers turned back.

  9. Richard I “The Lionhearted” captured the city of Acre. • Negotiated w/ Saladin for prisoner exchange and the “True Cross,” which had been removed from Jerusalem.

  10. Saladin stalled, negotiations broke down… • Richard ordered all of the Muslim prisoners, with their wives and children, to be killed, which was carried out in full view of Saladin's army.

  11. A dark blot rests upon Richard's memory for the murder in cold blood of twenty-seven hundred prisoners in the full sight of Saladin's troops and as a punishment for the non-payment of the ransom money. The massacre, a few days before, of Christian captives, if it really occurred, in part explains but cannot condone the crime.

  12. Results of the Third Crusade. • Crusaders keep Acre and Tyre. • Christian Pilgrims allowed to enter Jerusalem. • Jerusalem would stay under Muslim hands.
