  5. Scheduling Procedures: 1. Meet with students in English classes 2. Students fill out scheduling sheet 3. Scheduling sheet comes home for parent/guardian autograph 4. Student returns sheet to English teacher or to Ms. Foth 5. Guidance addresses any recommendations or request conflicts 6. Encouraged to enroll in 6 classes 7. Magic 8. You are a 9th grader

IN 9th grade all students will take: • English – English 1 CP or English 1 Honors • Math – Algebra 1 CP, Geometry 1 CP, Geometry 1 Honors or Integrated Algebra (Integrated Algebra is NOT a CP course) • Science – Physical Science 1 CP or Biology 1 Honors • Social Studies – World History 1 CP or World History 1 Honors • Physical Education – 1 semester

  7. English: English 1 CP: For the college bound student. American literature, including several novels and plays. Review of grammatical and writing principles. English 1 Honors: A more rigorous course. Covers the same material, but at a much faster pace. Includes more individual projects and a large research paper. Students are expected to read one novel on their own per quarter. Students must also read 2 books and complete a project over the summer.

  8. Math: Algebra 1 CP: Majority of 9th graders. Students should be able to solve algebraic equations with ease. Integrated Algebra 1: Same material as Algebra 1 but a slower pace and more repetition. NOT A CP course. Geometry 1 CP: Students who have already taken Algebra I take this class next. Geometry 1 Honors: Really only for students who have taken Algebra 8 Honors in 8th grade and have their teacher’s recommendation. The difference is in the rigor of the course, the expectations and the pace.

  9. History: World History 1 CP: Majority of 9th graders enroll in this course. Covers the development of government. World History 1 Honors: Same information but more in-depth. Tests and quizzes are more difficult. There are more independent projects and research assignments.

  10. Science: Physical Science 1 CP: Majority of 9th graders. Introduction to chemistry and physics. Biology 1 Honors: YOU SKIP 9th GRADE SCIENCE. This is a 10th grade course and covers different material. Success in this course opens up opportunities for more science courses in your future. You should get a teacher recommendation. (If you are interested…TALK to your Science teacher.) You must also complete a summer chemistry packet. There will be a test on it within the first week of school.

  11. Physical Education: Worth .25 credit All students need to take it for a semester.

Electives: To graduate you need: ½ a credit in technology 1 credit in Fine Arts ~get it out of the way! ½ TECHNOLOGY CREDIT Computer Keyboarding Develop necessary keyboarding skills for today’s work place. Use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access. Microsoft Applications Intermediate features of Microsoft Office: Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentation Graphics, Internet, Desktop Publishing and Database. Exploring Technology & Engineering Explores basic technology, engineering concepts and principles, and related careers. Integrates Science, Math & Language Arts. Hands on and great for students interested in construction, technical or engineering career fields. 1 FINE ARTS CREDIT Art 1 Band 9 Must have taken band in 8th grade. Emphasis on strengthening music fundamentals. Baritone Choir 9 (guys) Treble Choir 8 (gals) Art Appreciation (½ credit) Introduction to historical periods of art and major artists, covers the elements and principles of art. Music Appreciation (½ credit) Develop awareness of elements and styles of music.

  13. Other Elective options: RECORD KEEPING (1/2 credit) General home and business accounting principles. MANAGING PERSONAL TRANSITIONS I (1/2 credit) Personal Development MANAGING PERSONAL TRANSITIONS II (1/2 credit) Future Career & Finance FRENCH 1 Recommend students have a “C” or better in English and a minimum GPA of 2.5. Emphasis on students’ comprehension of spoken French and building a basic vocabulary. Introduction to French culture SPANISH 1 Recommend studets have a “C” or better in English and a minimum GPA of 2.5. Emphasis on students’ comprehension of spoken Spanish and building a basic vocabulary. Introduction to Hispanic culture.

  14. Word of Warning: You need 5.5 credits to move on to 10th grade. If you don’t pass a semester of a REQUIRED COURSE, you don’t earn the credit. YOU WILL NEED TO REPEAT IT. Sorry.

  16. Award of Merit: 1. Complete English, Math, Science and Social Studies same as graduation requirements 2. 3 Credits of Foreign Language: 3 credits in one language or 2 credits each of two languages 3. 2 Credits from Business, Computer Science or Visual and Performing Arts or2 additional credits from #1 or #2 4. Maintain above average attendance 5. Overall 3.25 or 3.5 in grades 11 & 12 ~or~ rank in the top 25% 6. Participate in co-curricular, extracurricular or community activities: 20 hours each in 9th & 10thand 30 hours each in 11th and 12th grades or 50 hours each in 11th & 12th grades 7. Demonstrate outstanding citizenship/character traits: No out of School Suspensions, No In-School suspensions

  17. Honors Diploma: Astudent must meet any 7 of 8: • English 4 credits • Math 4 credits (including Algebra 1 &2, Geometry and another higher level course) • Science 4 credits (including Physics & Chemistry) • Social Studies 4 credits • Foreign Lang. 3 credits (3 in one language or 2 credits in each of 2 languages) • Fine Art 1 credit • Overall GPA 3.5 on a 4.0 scale • Test Scores ACT 27 or SAT 1210 (excluding scores from written sections)

  18. Valedictorian & Salutatorian: Determined at the end of the 7th semester The student that has taken the most amount of weighted (AP and Honors) courses with all “A’s”. Students will not be disadvantaged by taking more credits. Any student that signs up for PSEO will not be eligible for Valedictorian or Salutatorian. PSEO courses are not weighted courses.

  19. Auburn CareerCenter:NCAA: • Attendance • Achieve Junior Credit Status at the end of their 10th grade year: 11.5 credits • Students must register online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net summer prior to 12th grade. • ACT/SAT scores sent directly to NCAA • 2.0 GPA • Minimum SAT score is 820 • Minimum ACT sum score is 68 • 16 Core Courses required for Division I and Division II • www.ncaa.org click on “Academics and Athletes” then “Eligibility and Recruiting”

Athletic Eligibility: •Student must receive passing grades in a minimum of 5 one-credit courses • 1.75 GPA or higher • If a student is ineligible due to academics, they may practice but not participate in competition or performances. • Summer school cannot substitute for failure • Students must pass a physician’s physical exam. • Insurance/Fees/Rules • Represent Riverside

  21. Things to consider: What is your future goal? What do you want to be? What will you need to know, accomplish, do? How will you prioritize? Hold yourself responsible? Own your education? Are you doing those things now? What changes can you start right now?

OCISOhio Career Information System: •OCIS provides information on careers and college/universities and trade/tech schools not only in Ohio but in the United States. • 8th grade students who had computer awareness during the 1st semester developed an individual portfolio-8th grade students this semester will develop their portfolios later in the year. • These portfolios can be used throughout high school. • Check OCIS out on our website: www.townshipschools.com select - Riverside High School - Media Center- OCIS - Username – RiverHS - password – ohiocis03

  24. Finally…Questions? Warning to parents/guardians: Please don’t get caught up in the plan. Think about what YOUR child needs to be successful. Think about the rigor and challenge of a course. Talk to your student’s teachers and please consider their recommendations.
