Is it an appropriate ending? • Should he have written more? • Why might he have ended the gospel here, so suddenly? • Explain your views: • Give 2 reasons why it is an appropriate and correct ending • Give 2 reasons why a longer (lost) ending might have been the real ending • Explain your view Mark’s Gospel ends at Ch.16:8. The earliest manuscripts of Mark’s Gospel end at vs.8. The remaining verses have been added in the next 200 years, borrowed from the other gospels. The gospel could have been written on parchment scrolls, and the end bit broken off. Or Mark died in Nero’s persecutions It is very abrupt for a proper ending The ending leaves with the dramatic message that Jesus is risen. The reader to reflect on Jesus’ life and death, and promise to “go before you” Mark’s Greek was not good – abruptness not so surprising. It ends on “they were afraid”. There is fear and confusion – surely the Gospel as Good News should be clearer on how the resurrection is good news. The women’s amazement and fear is appropriate final comment on what has happened The message given to the women is full of forgiveness and comfort – the disciples were to go to Galilee and make a fresh start
