Basin Scale Progress • 10-20 years runs have been performed using the two different vertical coordinate systems (with and without tides) • The final production runs are set up and will run over the next month (1980-2010). • These runs will have an extended domain, rivers and an updated bathymetry. • Code is being tested to quantify cross shelf fluxes and perform a series of lagragian experiments.
Particle Tracking Study • Experimental testing underway using NOCS 1/12 model output, awaiting final production runs. • Idea is loosely based on the provenance of water masses making it onto the northwest European Shelf. • We will perform a transient experiment, releasing particles along the shelf break every month between 1985-2005 to, build up a statistical map. • These particle will be tracked for 5 years both forward and backward in time. • Location, age, temperature and salinity will be stored to examine the provenance, fate and shelf residence time of the particle arriving at the northwest European Shelf. • Ideas to explore • We can split loosely into NOA+ years (1986-1995) and NAO- years (1996-2005) and also look more generally at both interannual and season break down of trajectory data. • Produce generalisedmap of all particle trajectories • Annual (growing season) point locations • Provenance broken down by T/S properties of basin origin • Evolution of water mass properties over time • This study will lead onto a more detailed examination of cross shelf fluxes in the model, residence times on the shelf and transport pathways once on the shelf (+ comparisons with AMM60 results)
