SAGE and IMechE: Engineering the Future 11thAnkosAnnual Conference April 30, 2011 Mark Lord
SAGE Engineering & Materials Science Collection • 50 journals: • 18 from the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) - September 2010 • 32 high-quality journals covering civil engineering, electronic engineering and materials science • SAGE now 3rd in the Mechanical Engineering Category • Engineering research key driver for economic growth
IMechE – the Past • Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) • Founded in 1847 by George Stephenson and other mechanical engineers: “To enable engineers to meet …and correspond, and by a mutual interchange of ideas respecting improvements in the various branches of mechanical science to increase their knowledge, and to give impulse to inventions likely to be useful to the world.” • Distinguished members of the IMechE and contributors to the Proceedings of the IMechE: • George Stephenson – the father of the railways • Charles William Siemens – established the telegraph network, and was part of the Siemens family who started the famous German company of that name • Joseph Whitworth – famous for precision manufacturing, including rifling of weapons • Frank Whittle – the father of jet propulsion • Charles Algernon Parsons – invented the steam turbine, used in propulsion of ships and power generation (and still used to generate most of our electricity) • Rudolph Diesel – invented the diesel engine
IMechE – the Present and the Future • Membership organization of 80,000 members worldwide • Vision: “To improve the world through engineering” • Campaigns to promote mechanical engineering around 4 key themes: Energy, Education, Environment and Transport
Why SAGE and IMechE? • SAGE and IMechE both believe passionately in importance of disseminating scholarly research to the benefit of society • SAGE growing rapidly as an STM publisher • SAGE views Engineering as an area of major future growth
