Professional Registration with the IMechE • CEng and IEng are very different qualifications, but with equal importance to industry and the Institution. • Inclusion of IEng broadens the IMechE membership base, raising its profile and expanding its influence • Regular feedback shows a need for a more integrated IMechE membership

Registration Formation Professional Review CENG Education • MEng • B(Hons) degree plus Masters • B(Hons) degree plus further learning Professional Development Demonstration of competence, knowledge and understanding. If you do not have exempting qualifications, you may be required to submit a technical report IENG Education • HNC/HND/FD plus further learning • Bachelors degree Professional Development UK-SPEC

Professional Registration Initial Professional Development (IPD)
Initial Professional Development • A good grounding in basic engineering principles • Achieved a position of professional responsibility • Capable of demonstrating competence as an engineer
IPD for CEng and IEng • A period of professional development for a Chartered Engineer or an Incorporated Engineer covers a broad range of engineering skills to prepare applicants to satisfy the five core competencies assessed at Corporate member level.
IPD for IEngCompetence and Commitment • A combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology. • Appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services. • Provide technical and commercial management. • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills • Personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment. • It is unlikely that IPD will be completed in less than three years.
IPD for CEng Competence & Commitment • A combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology. • Appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis of engineering problems. • Provide technical and commercial leadership • Effective interpersonal skills • Personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment. • It is unlikely that IPD will be completed in less thanfour years
Professional Registration Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
IMechE’s CPD Policy • Members and Fellows who wish to practise as professional engineers must keep themselves up to date in the engineering profession • Applicants for the class of Member must be able to demonstrate by means of a Personal Development Plan how they propose to do this
CPD may include... • Formal and Informal Learning • Work-based learning, Distance learning • In-house courses, Work secondments • Private study, Special work projects • Writing technical papers • In-house or for general publication • Contributions to Engineering • Mentoring, voluntary work, school governor • IMechE Regions/Branches • YM and Committee work
Competence and Commitment • The Professional Engineer must be able to: • Use knowledge • Apply theory and practice • Provide leadership • Communicate effectively • Commit to the Profession

IMechE Top Tip! • As soon as you possibly can, spend some time collecting and arranging every bit of evidence of professional development you can think of: • Certificates of attendance at courses; old appraisal notes; summaries of projects; and relevant papers,etc. • Get them countersigned if you can
How Do I Measure Up? • The IMechE website provides: • Competence Profiles • Real life case studies of Engineers from different sectors and their experiences with regard to becoming Registered. • These can help you identify where you are now and what you need to do next.

Professional Registration Structure of Professional Review Report • Introduction • a brief summary of your career • Main text • a critique of your experience • select projects which demonstrate the range and depth of your responsibilities
Interview Format • With an interview panel • Interviewers abroad may not all be from IMechE • Member of IMechE staff present • UK and some overseas locations only • Discussion based on Professional Review reports • Will be assessed against competence statements • Interviews can take place in company

Interview outcome • Interview panel recommendation submitted to Professional Review Committee • Committee Secretary advises outcome: • Election to MIMechE, or • If the interview is not successful, re-apply in one or two years
IMechE Top Tip! • Involvement in local events or IMechE committees can be very useful. • You can make a good range of contacts who may be able to assist with your application. • Involvement demonstrates a commitment to the Institution and can be evidence of CPD.
Assessment of Competence • Marked against competence statements. • Candidates are scored 1 - 4 • As a minimum a candidate must score • 3 in three areas, and • 2 in two areas
