Functions of the Respiratory System • Takes in Oxygen and dispels carbon dioxide and waste • Maintains acid balance, upper airways provide smells, & all temperature regulation.
Organs of the Respiratory System • Nostrils: draw in the air needed for the animals respiratory process. • Nasal Cavity: air is warmed and moistened while dust particles are filtered out. This is where the smell receptors are as well. • Pharynx: site where air and food passages are joined and split into respective parts.
Organs Continued • Larynx (voice box): hollow, tube like structure at top of the trachea. Surrounded by an external skeleton made of cartilage. • Trachea (windpipe): tube or system of tubes that carries the air. Takes the air passed by the larynx into the two main bronchi. Moistens and warms air, also protects the respiratory surface from an accumulation of foreign particles. • Cilia: hairlike projections used to trap particles.
Organs Continued • Bronchi: there are 2 bronchial tubes in the respiratory system. Further warm, moisten and clean the air, also distribute it to the gas exchanging zone of the lungs. • Right bronchus is larger in diameter, oriented more vertically and shorter than left bronchus. • Alveoli: this microscopic sacs located inside the bronchioles and lungs. Where carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange happens.
Organs Continued • Lungs: large lobed organs that contain parts essential for oxygen exchange. Spongy, pinkish colored organ located between the front legs of the animal and extends to the abdominal area. The right lung makes up 56 percent of total lung volume. • Diaphragm: domelike sheet of muscle seperating the abdominal and chest cavities that move downward as it contracts.
Differences between species • Sponges and jellyfish • Worms • Anthropods, annelids and fish • Terrestrial vertebrates
