Record • Compare the reaction times of your own hands. Why might one hand react more quickly than the other? • Compare your results with your partner’s. Why might one person react more quickly than another?

Nervous System Functions • Collects information and decides what the information means • Responds to the information it has collected
CNS vs. PNS CNS (Central Nervous System)-includes brain and spinal cord Function: takes in and responds to information from the PNS PNS (Peripheral Nervous System)- includes all the other parts Function: connects all parts of the body to the CNS
How Does The Information Move? Read page 394, Chapt 25 Sect 1 and summarize this process
Neurons (special cells) • Impulses (electrical messages) travel from dendrites (parts of the neuron that branch from the cell body) to the cell body (which contains the nucleus and organelles) • Impulses then travel from cell body to the axons (longer than dendrites-carry info to other cells)
Math Practice To calculate how long an impulse takes to travel a certain distance, you can use the following equation: time=distance/speed If an impulse travels 100m/s, about how long will it take the impulse to travel 10 meters?
Math Practice Use the equation to answer the following question: time=distance/speed If an impulse has a speed of 38m/s, about how long didit travel if it only took the impulse 30seconds to get there?
Define The Following (use your book starting on page 393-Chapter 2): • Sensory neurons • Motor neurons • Nerves • Somatic nervous system • Autonomic nervous system
Define The Following: • Sensory neurons-carry info about what is happening in and around your body to the CNS • Motor neurons-carry impulses from the CNS to other parts of your body • Nerves-groups of axons wrapped together with blood vessels and connective tissue • Somatic nervous system-motor neurons in the PNS that you control (like voluntary muscles)(ex: walking, writing, talking) • Autonomic nervous system-motor neurons in the PNS that you cannot control (ex: digestion, heart beating)
Parts Of The Nervous System • Brain (largest organ)-three main parts: cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla • Cerebrum (cerebral cortex is part of this-the grey matter)-largest part of the brain where you think and most memories are kept. Made up of two hemispheres. The left side controls movement on right side of the body. This includes speaking, reading, solving problems. The right side controls music and interpreting emotions
3. Cerebellum-receives and processes information from your body such as from your skeletal muscles and joints. Helps with balance 4. Medulla-part that connects to spinal cord. Controls heart rate and breathing. 5. Spinal cord- surrounded by vertebrae, made of neurons that send impulses to and from brain
