Activity 4 Below is a review of AvrilLavigne’s latest album, Goodbye Lullaby. Work in groups of four. With your group members, arrange the paragraphs below to make a good album review
This new CD from Avril Lavigne is different than her three previous albums. This is full of ballads and for the most part are well written. Her new direction is promising, and we cannot wait to see where she goes from here. Overall, “Goodbye Lullaby” is still an album we believe most fans will enjoy. Music critics noted that the songs were very equal to each other, calling the album non-original and basic.
Among its upbeat tracks are “What the Hell,” an unabashed embrace of fun and freedom, and “Stop Standing There,” fueled by an early-’50s girl-group feel. The album runs the gamut of emotions: Lavigne expresses her gratitude for special people in her life in the rocker “Smile,” explores the dynamics of a relationship in “Push,” shows her vulnerable side in “Wish You Were Here,” and finds the strength to close one chapter of her life and move on to the next in the title track “Goodbye.”
Goodbye Lullaby is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne. The album was released on 2 March 2011 through RCA Records (Sony Music). Two years in the making, Lavigne worked with longtime collaborators Deryck Whibley, Evan Taubenfeld and Butch Walker, as well as songwriter/producer Max Martin. Lavigne continues to share her personal experiences through her writing and music, and “Goodbye Lullaby” is a further evolution of this, propelled by a more raw and organic sound. The album’s songs contain mostly stripped down instruments, such as the piano and acoustic guitar. Every song on the album was written by Lavigne, with half of the album being written with co-writers.
Lavigne premiered the lead single, “What the Hell“, on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on 31 December 2010 during a pre-taped segment along with a performance of “Girlfriend”. Lavigne said the song is “a really fun, upbeat party song, so it worked out really well to play it for the first time on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.”The following day, “What the Hell” was available as a free download for 48 hours from Lavigne’s official Facebook page. The video for the single was released in January 2011.
