Foundation Year in Computing The transition to University Learning Delivered by Dave Thomas, K235 e: d.t.thomas@staffs.ac.uk w: www.fcet.staffs.ac.uk/dtt1
What we will cover • Transition to University learning • What it’s about • Attendance, conduct, academic misconduct • Extenuating Circumstances - the basics • Academic dishonesty – the basics • STARS Elections • the ‘and finally’ slide
What it’s about • Learning to learn the HE way • Learning – not being taught • Treating your learning like a full time job is a good frame of mind – 40 hours a week • Attend – and keep up! • Aim to enjoy your learning • Help will be readily and willingly available • Be a ‘strategic learner’ only • and you will have to whistle
How you are to learn (from Monday) • Four modules: • iPAS,iM,iSDCS, iWTDS • Lectures, Tutorials and Workshops and your own work • Assessments (assignments, portfolios, presentations, class tests, etc, etc) • research, reading, exercises, watching the telly, chatting in the bar etc • Lots of module time is designed to help you do well in these tasks
Attendance, conduct • We’ll notice if you aren’t attending • Attending usually leads to good relationships, good learning and good marks • The university regulations are clear – especially page 5, section 3.6 • Expectations of your conduct are also defined • as are most things – somewhere
Academic misconduct • is also well defined here • and cheats no-one but yourself • but, if you’d like help to do it, click here • and if you’d like help to avoid it, click here • don’t go there – the penalties are not worth it and you WILL be found out
Extenuating Circumstances • are a recognition by the university that there can be good reasons why your work is either late, or worse that you are capable of or both • and have a procedure here • if, for good reason, your are struggling with some piece of assessment TALK TO SOMEONE (even me) and do the extenuating thing promptly
STARs and STARs Elections • A STAR (here) is a STudent Academic Representative • We (the academic staff) like them (and want them) • The Student Union like them (and want them) • It looks good to employers on your CV • Please consider it (at least)
And finally • Logging you on to Blackboard • and we have covered: • Transition to University learning • What it’s about • Attendance, conduct, academic misconduct • Extenuating Circumstances - the basics • STARS Elections • Next – your first personal tutor meeting • Any questions?
