Background & Objectives • English is taught as Literature in schools. • Learners have no idea about Listening Skills. • But, University prescribes development of Listening Comprehension. Objectives: • Enable learners to Listen effectively to GIE. • Enable them to use Bottom – up & Top – Down technique. • Enable them to listen to facial expressions.
Methods Teacher’s Work: • Setting up of Bottom – Up & Top – Down goals. • Selecting popular animation films. • Grading the targets andthe task. • Facilitating effective listening. • Motivate, prepare & contextualize the learners. • Distribution the Worksheets.
Methods Implementation Phase: • Listening Effectively to popular animation film. • Taking down flexible notes. • Answering questions individually. • Pairs or group work for discussion. • Guidance to improve listening skills • Role play as post – listening activity.
Results and Discussion Bottom – Up Processing Targets: • Identifying content word by the stress pattern. • Identify specific information & organizational clues. • Identify appropriate expression for various moods. Top – Down Processing Targets: • Compare information with their own experiences. • Use the context and predict the next content.
Results and Discussion Teacher’s Work • Review the popular animation film and select. • Set questions keeping in mind the targets. • Question sequence should follow action sequence. • Minimize external factors affecting effective listening. • The video & audio quality should be excellent. • Adequate Logistic support for sound amplification.

Results and Discussion Post – Listening Phase: • Learners answer the Questions individually. • They pair or group for peer review and discussion. • Guidance given regarding Listening techniques to use. • Learner’s feedback sought on the task accomplished. • Learners play Role as post – listening activity.
Results and Discussion Why Popular Indian Animation Films? • Learners could concentrate better on the content. • They remained mentally and emotionally motivated. • Musical clues and prominent expressions provide insight. • Indian learners could immediately relate to the films.
Results and Discussion Problems with Hollywood films: • Learners could hardly relate to Hollywood films. • Actions being fast paced, facts received are fragmented. • Dialogues are in American English not in GIE. • Unable to listen to the content words. • Context and emotional expression more alien. • More noisy.
Results and Discussion Advantages of Indian Animation Films: • No such problems with Indian animation films. • Funny presentations spark the learner’s imagination. • Help the listeners to moderate their personal ego. • Learners could remain free from emotional disturbances.
Results and Discussion Advantages of Indian Animation Films: • Minimum possibility of ‘wrong assumptions’. • The films are Relevant. • Facial expressions help learners to identify emotions. • Expressions does help in effective communication process. • Content has ‘transferable’ potential. • Appeals equally to heterogeneous class of learners.
Conclusion • See Classrooms as powerhouse of possibilities. • Be thoughtful and innovative with everything. • Use your own popular animation films so that: • Learners may relate to the content, • Take interest in listening. • Could learn more about using listening strategies.
